Land clearing in Herrin usually starts with ground you stopped using. Brush crept into the fence line, and saplings took the back acre. Now a mower or a truck cannot get through. Herrin sits in the middle of Williamson County, where old coal ground meets farm ground. Lots on the edge of town back up to thick timber and scrub. Out toward Energy and Cambria, the county roads run past older farmsteads and small acreage. That kind of ground grows back fast in southern Illinois. A few seasons of nothing and the treeline is in the yard. If your place in 62948 looks that way, it can be opened back up.
Blackburn Land Service works out of Cobden, about 30 miles southwest of Herrin. Carbondale sits about halfway, and the drive is up US 51 and over Route 13. We run a tracked skid steer with a forestry mulching head. It grinds brush and small trees where they stand and cuts stumps down to grade. The material stays on the ground as mulch, so there is no burn pile and nothing to haul off. Around Herrin we handle forestry mulching on overgrown acreage and brush clearing along fence lines. Small jobs are welcome, and we are fully insured. We come look at the ground with you and give you a price before anything starts.

Herrin grew up as a coal town after coal was found here in the 1890s. Plenty of that mined and farmed ground has gone back to brush and young timber. The city itself is mostly houses now, and acreage starts outside the city limits. Illinois Route 148 runs north and south through Herrin and meets Route 13 near town. Along those roads you find small farms and older homes on small acreage. Back lots like that are where brush gets away from people.
Herrin Lake #1 sits on the southwest edge of town and covers about 60 acres. Crab Orchard Lake and the national wildlife refuge start about five miles south on Route 148. Pond Creek runs near Herrin and drains close to 95 square miles. Ground near water grows the heaviest cover, and creek bottoms fill in first. Bush honeysuckle and multiflora rose are widespread in Illinois and take over fence lines. Left alone, they turn open ground into a wall you cannot get through.
We bring a tracked skid steer with a forestry mulching head onto the property. The machine grinds standing brush and small trees into chips on the spot. Stumps get cut to grade so the ground stays level for a mower. Tracks spread the weight, which helps on soft ground and wet creek bottoms. Nothing gets piled and nothing gets burned. You are left with a chip layer that holds soil and breaks down over time.
Work around Herrin covers overgrown lots and old pasture that went to brush. Trail cutting opens a path through timber wide enough for a mower or an ATV. Hunting property improvement means shooting lanes and food plot openings on ground you hunt. Stump removal and dirt work sit outside what we do, and we are not a tree service. If a job needs a bucket and a dump truck, we say so up front. Getting a price costs nothing, and small jobs are fine with us.
